A Message From The President
2022 has been a momentous year for the club.
As we enter the 2023 season I will reflect first on what was a successful 2022.
We of course tasted the ultimate success with our senior men in 2022 going back to back premiers. A great effort by all involved in the football department. As president I can’t be prouder of our Cities family when we fill Cazalys to cheer on our teams.
Our women’s team also made it through to the grand final making it a great day for the club. Unfortunately they came up against a strong running Cairns Saints team who took out the prize. Congratulations to all involved our women’s team.
Our reserves/development team struggled throughout the year with numbers and consistent performance. I made a commitment at our presentation night that the club will invest more here.
In the off-season we have been busy not only strengthening up our football department but making some changes around the club.
The change room renovation will be completed and ready for round one and will provide female-friendly facilities and a fresh clean appearance.
We have reinvented the wheel by renovating the canteen back into the kitchen area making it a user friendly space and removing the need to set up temporary arrangements.
Thanks to all who have worked at the club to get these jobs done.
We have been busy on the grant application front also as we chase much needed funds for improved lighting, scoreboard and other items. (Watch this space!)
From a football perspective a number of our 2022 premiership team have moved on to higher opportunities and we will follow their journey and wish them the best.
We enter 2023 full of confidence as a club that knows how to get the job done with limited resources. Aaron Davey will continue as Head coach for a 6th year ably assisted by Aaron Flint. We have welcomed Daniel Lock with his 350+ games of senior AFL Cairns experience to the club and he will lead up the development team and act as assistant to the senior team. Excitingly we have a new pride of lion cubs that will
taste senior football this year and we will field a strong colts teams for the first time since some of our young premiership stars were playing underage football.
Dual youth girls premiership coach Jason Wray has taken on the role as Senior Women’s coach. Again we have lost a number of players who are exploring other opportunities but I am sure we will have a competitive list.
Round 1 is on 15th May and I hope to see a huge crowd at home as we raise our premiership flag.
